Your LGBTQ Centre Your LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,queer/questioning) Centre exists to empower LGBTQ indentified individuals and ourallies and educate the greater community on LGBTQ related issues. It creates acampus culture that values equality, and celebrates diversity. What services are offered at Your LGBTQ Centre? There are four main facets ofYour LGBTQ Centre: Drop-inspace: YourLGBTQ Centre is a non-judgmental, safe, fun place for lesbian, gay, bisexual,transgender, queer or questioning, intersex and allied students to meet friends,to learn about LGBTQ issues and empower one another. Resources: The resource bank offers a number of brochures,books, journals, magazines and research articles. Items are available fortwo-week checkout. Recommendations are encouraged! Advocacy: The centre serves as a primary resource for peer support, crisisintervention and information and referral services. The staff can referstudents to campus and community organizations that offer guidance and answersto your questions, if we are unable to. There is a diverse range of issuesdealt with at Your LGBTQ Centre, such as being “hetero-flexible” totransitioning gender. Events: The centre hosts LGBTQ-specific events including events about equalityissues, hate and homophobic motivated violence awareness initiatives,negotiating safety, safety planning and healthy life-skills development - whilestriving to provide education and a safe space to all members of the campus. Why do we need an LGBTQ Centre on campus? Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer andAllied (LGBTQA) students need a space of their own on campus to gather and workfor change within a college/university setting because: · Homophobicharassment, discrimination and violence occur on campusevery year. · LGBTQ indentified students haveunique concerns and needs. · Gender stereotyping andhomophobic/heterosexist language are predominant features of many classrooms, textbooksand curricula. · Many LGBTQ individuals face doubleor triple discrimination because of intersecting identities of race, ethnicity,gender identity, (dis)ability, creed, socio-economic status and otheridentities that face discrimination. · LGBTQ students are the unidentifiedtargets of many derogatory terms and slurs on campus. Is your service confidential? Yes, our service is free andconfidential. Whether you talk to us over thetelephone, face-to-face or by e-mail, your confidentiality is strictlymaintained. Confidentiality is vital to our mission and emphasized in all ourtraining. All volunteers, placement students and staff are trained onconfidentiality matters. Most importantly - visit us!
