Why do we need an LGBTQ Centre on campus?

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer andAllied (LGBTQA) students need a space of their own on campus to gather and workfor change within a college/university setting because:

·      Homophobicharassment, discrimination and violence occur on campusevery year.

·      LGBTQ indentified students haveunique concerns and needs.

·      Gender stereotyping andhomophobic/heterosexist language are predominant features of many classrooms, textbooksand curricula.

·      Many LGBTQ individuals face doubleor triple discrimination because of intersecting identities of race, ethnicity, gender identity, (dis)ability, creed, socio-economic status and otheridentities that face discrimination.

·      LGBTQ students are the unidentifiedtargets of many derogatory terms and slurs on campus.
