Your LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans gender, queer/questioning) Centre exists to empower LGBTQ indentified individuals and our allies and educate the greater community on LGBTQ related issues. It creates a campus culture that values equality, and celebrates diversity.

What services are offered at Your LGBTQ Centre?

There are four main facets of Your LGBTQ Centre:

  • Drop-in space: Your LGBTQ Centre is a non-judgmental, safe, fun place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex and allied students to meet friends ,to learn about LGBTQ issues and empower one another.

  • Resources: The resource bank offers a number of brochures, books, journals, magazines and research articles. Items are available for two-week checkouts. Recommendations are encouraged!

  • Advocacy: The centre serves as a primary resource for peer support, crisis intervention and information and referral services. The staff can refer students to campus and community organizations that offer guidance and answers to your questions, if we are unable to. There is a diverse range of issues dealt with at Your LGBTQ Centre, such as being “hetero-flexible” to transitioning gender.

  • Events: The centre hosts LGBTQ-specific events including events about equality issues, hate and homophobic motivated violence awareness initiatives, negotiating safety, safety planning and healthy life-skills development - while striving to provide education and a safe space to all members of the campus.

Why do we need an LGBTQ Centre on campus?

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning/Queer and Allied (LGBTQA) students need a space of their own on campus to gather and work for change within a college/university setting because:

  • Homophobic harassment, discrimination and violence occur on campus every year.
  • LGBTQ indentified students have unique concerns and needs.
  • Gender stereotyping and homophobic/heterosexist language are predominant features of many classrooms, textbooks and curricula.
  • Many LGBTQ individuals face double or triple discrimination because of intersecting identities of race, ethnicity, gender identity, (dis)ability, creed, socio-economic status and other identities that face discrimination.
  • LGBTQ students are the unidentified targets of many derogatory terms and slurs on campus.
